Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine for Tension Headaches

Did you know? A 2022 clinical trial with 218 people found that after 20 acupuncture sessions over 8 weeks, 68% of participants cut their monthly headache days by half or more.

What Are Tension Headaches?

Tension headaches are the most common headache people experience. They often feel like a tight band around the head or a dull ache behind the eyes, temples, and the back of the neck. Stress, muscle tension, posture and long hours at a desk usually make them worse.

How Common Are They in Australia?

Tension-type headaches affect up to 38% of Australian adults each year. They are more frequent in people who:

  • Work at desks or screens

  • Carry stress or emotional load

  • Sleep poorly

  • Have neck or shoulder tension

  • Do repetitive or static work

Even when the pain isn’t severe, the ongoing pressure can drag down your quality of life.

How Tension Headaches Affect Daily Life

People often tell me they:

  • Wake already feeling tense

  • Struggle to concentrate

  • Feel tight through the neck and shoulders

  • Rely on short-term relief

  • Notice mood changes from constant pressure

  • Feel exhausted by the end of the day

It’s the mix of physical tightness, mental stress and reduced energy that pushes many people to seek a natural and supportive approach.

What Modern Medicine Usually Recommends

GPs often suggest:

  • Heat

  • Stretching

  • Stress reduction

  • Rest

  • OTC medication

  • Posture corrections

  • Managing triggers

These help many people, but chronic tension headaches often linger or return.

This is usually when people look into acupuncture and Chinese medicine as part of long-term management.

How Chinese Medicine Understands Tension Headaches

In Chinese medicine, tension headaches often relate to:

  • Qi stagnation from stress

  • Liver and Gallbladder channel tension (temples, sides of the head, neck)

  • Tightness blocking flow through the shoulders and upper back

  • Emotional strain or mental workload

  • Poor circulation to the head and neck

When these systems become congested, pressure builds and headaches appear.

Acupuncture aims to restore circulation, release tension, calm the mind and support the body through busy, stressful periods.

How Acupuncture May Help Tension Headache Symptoms

Your treatment plan reflects your lifestyle, work demands, posture, sleep, and emotional load.

Many people combine acupuncture with herbs, stretching, ergonomic support and stress-management tools.

What the Research Says

High-quality evidence supports acupuncture for tension-type headaches

Large RCT – 218 participants (2022)

  • Participants received 20 sessions over 8 weeks

  • 68.2% reached ?50% reduction in monthly headache days

  • Headache days dropped by an average of 13.1 days vs 8.8 in the sham group at week 16

This study shows the strongest modern evidence so far.

Cochrane Review (2016) – 12 trials, 2,349 people

Key outcomes:

  • 48% of participants receiving acupuncture cut headache days by at least half

  • Only 19% of those receiving usual care reached the same improvement

  • Comparing real vs sham acupuncture: 52% vs 43% reached ?50% reduction

This is one of the highest levels of evidence we have in acupuncture research.

Clinical takeaway

While everyone responds differently, research suggests acupuncture may be a useful complementary therapy for tension-type headaches, especially when stress, muscle tension and poor circulation are part of the picture.

Important Information About Acupuncture

Acupuncture and Chinese medicine may help manage symptoms such as muscular tension, stress and headache-related discomfort. Research for tension-type headaches is stronger than for many other headache conditions, but acupuncture should be used as a complementary therapy, not a replacement for GP or specialist care.

Chinese medicine is generally considered safe when performed by a qualified practitioner; however, all health treatments carry risks. Possible side effects may include temporary soreness, bruising or light-headedness. I explain risks, benefits and alternatives before treatment so you can make an informed decision.
