Did You Know?

The Acupuncture Evidence Project reviewed several studies exploring acupuncture for respiratory symptoms, including cough, throat irritation and airway sensitivity. These studies discussed how acupuncture may influence neural pathways linked with the cough reflex.

Other research has looked at acupuncture’s potential role in supporting people with chronic or unexplained cough by addressing stress, muscle tension and upper airway irritation.

Chronic Cough at a Glance

A chronic cough lasts longer than eight weeks and often continues even after a cold or infection has cleared. It may feel dry, tickly or productive, and can come with throat clearing, chest tightness or disrupted sleep.

What Is Chronic Cough?

A chronic cough is a long-lasting cough that persists beyond the normal healing period of most respiratory infections. It often develops when the airways remain sensitive or irritated. Common contributors include post-nasal drip, sinus inflammation, asthma, reflux, lingering infection or environmental factors.

For some people, the cause remains unclear even after investigations. This is sometimes called “chronic refractory cough.”

Impact on Daily Life

A persistent cough can disrupt rest, work and social situations. Many people describe constant throat clearing, interrupted sleep, fatigue and difficulty concentrating. The ongoing irritation may also lead to voice strain or discomfort in the chest and upper back from repeated coughing.

Modern Medicine Overview

Modern medical care looks for underlying causes such as sinus problems, asthma, gastroesophageal reflux, airway inflammation or medication side effects. Treatment may include inhalers, reflux medications, nasal sprays, antihistamines or addressing environmental triggers. When symptoms continue despite these approaches, additional support strategies are often considered.

How Acupuncture May Help

People often seek acupuncture for chronic cough because it may help support the body’s natural calming and regulatory processes. Acupuncture is commonly used to address symptoms such as throat tightness, chest tension, stress-related breathing patterns and sinus irritation.

Some individuals also explore Chinese medicine and herbal medicine as part of a broader approach to respiratory discomfort, sinus congestion or digestive patterns that may influence coughing.

These methods are used alongside, not in place of, medical care.

Traditional Chinese Medicine View

In Chinese medicine, chronic cough may relate to patterns involving the Lung, Spleen, or Liver systems. These patterns do not diagnose disease but help explain how the body’s functions might become disrupted. Common themes include:

  • lingering external pathogenic factors
  • phlegm accumulation or dampness
  • Lung Qi weakness
  • Liver Qi affecting the chest or diaphragm

The focus is on restoring balance, easing throat and chest irritation and supporting the body’s natural rhythms.

Research Summary

The Acupuncture Evidence Project (2017) reviewed studies exploring acupuncture for respiratory symptoms, including chronic cough, asthma-related coughing and upper airway sensitivity. It reported that acupuncture was associated with improvements in cough frequency or symptom scores in several trials, although more targeted research is still needed.

A 2016 systematic review in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine looked at acupuncture for chronic cough and found potential symptom relief in certain studies, with authors noting the need for larger, high-quality research.

Other studies have explored how acupuncture may influence neural pathways involved in the cough reflex and may modulate airway sensitivity. These findings are preliminary and are discussed as emerging evidence rather than definitive conclusions.

What a Session May Look Like

During a consultation, we’ll go through your symptoms, health history and what’s been happening recently. If acupuncture is suitable, I’ll place fine, single-use sterile needles at points chosen for your presentation.

Cupping or electroacupuncture may be used in some sessions. Herbal medicine may also be discussed when it seems appropriate for your overall pattern.

Sessions focus on gentle needling and supporting the body’s natural processes. I keep the approach simple and based on your individual needs without unnecessary add-ons.

Other Supportive Approaches

Depending on your presentation, your treatment plan may include:

Not all of these are used in every session. The approach is based on what seems most suitable for your condition.

Self-Care and Lifestyle Support

Simple home-based strategies may offer additional support. These can include:

  • reducing irritants such as smoke or strong fragrances
  • keeping hydrated to soothe throat tissues
  • gentle steam inhalation to ease dryness
  • monitoring reflux triggers such as late meals, coffee or spicy foods
  • light breathing exercises to calm airway sensitivity

These suggestions are not a replacement for medical advice. They’re general ideas you can adapt to your situation.
